His next appearance on the field was during the UEFA Cup against Celta Vigo, taking the place of Jamie Redknapp. He finished of the season with 13 appearances on the field without scoring a goal.
1999-2000 Gerrard started out the 1999 season as central midfielder. After only starting in six games, he got sent back to the bench during a game versus Everson. However, he still ended up playing in that same game as a substitute for Robbie Fowler.
The only time he scored during the 2000 season was in a victory to Sheffield Wednesday. After suffering from back and groin injuries, following doctors orders he sat out for the rest of the season, and he was not able to play at the international level.
2000-2001: This year brought a lot of success to Steven Gerrard. He overcame all of his injuries and was able to start in UEFA Champion's League, Premier League, and English FA cup. Steve Gerrard made the game winning goal to decide the UEFA Championship League Finals against Deportivo Alavés. His game winning kick was voted one of the top goals in Liverpool's Premiership Goals, and gave him the credibility to become England's Young Player of the Year that year. Liverpool ended up having their “treble season” winning the Premier League, English FA Cup, and UEFA Champion's League.
2002: Due to personal problems that Gerrard was going through with his parents divorcing in 2002, he was not playing at the top of his game, not scoring any goals in the UEFA Champion League. But, as the FA Cup approached, Steven went back to his old style of playing scoring five goals and starting in thirty two games. He scored one of two goals in a victory against rival Manchester United.
2003-2004: Due to his growing success, experience playing for the team, and the arrival of new manager Rafael Benítez he was offered the captain position in 2003. Along with that title he acquired a lot of expectations, such as to inspire other players to elevate their performance.
In the start of the 2004 Liverpool doing well due to the departure of Michael Owen to Real Madrid, a foot Injury to Gerrard that would put him out of play till November 2004, and the lead striker also being injured. However, Steven came back with a bang, scoring a critical goal in the last five minutes against the Greek team Olympiakos, in order to secure the teams spot in the last sixteen of the Champions League. The team went on to reach the final, but did not end up winning the championship.
2005-2006: This season was the most fruitful for Steven Gerrard. His success started out in the final game of the Champion's League against AC Milan, where he led his team to an impressive come from behind victory. While trailing AC Milan 3-0 in the 54th minute, Gerrard scored the first goal in a 3 goal come from behind tie during regular game play. Liverpool ended up winning the game in a penalty kick shootout.

Gerrard scored a 35 yard goal game tying goal in stoppage time to send the game into extra time. He won the match by scoring the game winning goal in a shootout .He became the UEFA's Most Valuable Player, and came in third in BBC's Sports Personality of the Year. His most valued accomplishment this season was being voted the PFA Player of the Year by his fellow team mates, the first player to do so since John Barnes in 1988.
2006-2007: Gerrard added the FA Community Shield to his collection of prizes. He substituted Boudewijn Zenden in the hour mark in the game between the winners of the FA Cup and the FA Premier League Champions. This season Liverpool ended up third in the Premier League, with Gerrard scoring only seven goals in 35 starts
Success this season came in the Champions League when Liverpool defeated Barcelona in order to get to the championship game against AC Milan. Unfortunately they lost the game, 2-1 with kuyt scoring the only goal for that match.
International Football
England Steven Gerrard made his first appearance on the world stage on May 31, 2000 in a game against Ukraine, during the European Cup Championship, while substituting for fellow Liverpool star Michael Owen. Unfortunately, England did not end up going far in the cup that year.
In 2001 Steve made his first international goal against Germany in the upset 1-5 for the FIFA World Cup qualifying match. Although, England qualified for the FIFA World Cup in 2002, but Gerrard was not able to play due to surgery in order to repair his groin injury, so that he could compete on the club level next season.
It was only till 2004 that Gerrard played a significant role on the world stage, in the European Championship. His first start was in a game against France, when his pass got intercepted by Thierry Henry, who was then brought down by David James, winning France a penalty kick which went for a goal. England ended up losing that game 2 to 1. The next two games England ended up winning, with Gerard scoring his first finals goal against Switzerland. England ended up losing in the next round to Portugal, with Gerrard being substituted in the 81st minute of the game.
Then in 2006 a few days before the FIFA World Cup Steven Gerrard suffered an injury which could have prevented him from playing the first game his second consecutive FIFA World Cup. Due to his strength and strong will to play on the world's greatest stage, he ended up starting against Portugal. England won that game 1-0. Gerrard ended up scoring only two goals for the rest of England's run in the FIFA World Cup. The first goal was a long ranged curved strike against Trinidad and Tobago during injury time. The second goal which he scored was against Sweden, when he headed the ball in the 85th minute for the game.
Due the absence of John Terry from England's squad, he was named the new team captain for England on February 5th 2008. However, his new position on the team is not set in stone and according to manager Fabio Capello 'I have made it clear already that I am not going to name a permanent captain until the Andorra match at the start of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. However, his future on the international stage seems to be bright, since the manager has nothing but praise for the Liverpool captain saying that" I think Steven Gerrard is important for everyone because he is a player who can motivate other players and transmit ideas”.
